Brunnera macrophylla (Chinese forget-me-not) is a shade-loving perennial with heart-shaped basal leaves and sprays of small sky-blue, forget-me-not–like flowers in spring, forming a 12–18" tall and wide clump ideal for woodland borders, shaded containers and groundcover in Willamette Valley gardens. Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in part to full shade (avoid hot afternoon sun), USDA zones 3–8; divide in spring or fall, deadhead spent blooms, watch for slugs and occasional powdery mildew, and enjoy low-maintenance, generally deer-resistant performance and striking variegated selections like 'Jack Frost'.
